VOLUNTEERING WITH EASTLEIGH BASICS BANK

The safety of all our volunteers is important to us, for their own wellbeing and for the
continuity of provision the Basics Bank makes to our community.
All volunteers need to be over eighteen years of age and sympathetic to the beliefs
and values of Christianity.

Our shop volunteers need to be good team players, able to work independently and
to follow instructions, and be good communicators with an ability to hold
conversations in English. Volunteers also need to be able to read food labels on
packaging and understand how to identify ingredients that customers have stated
they cannot eat for reasons such as allergy or dietary preference. All shop volunteers
need to be able to work quickly and efficiently, both when sorting and marking up
donations and when preparing packs for clients.

Shop volunteers need to be able to stand for long periods, pick food items from
shelving at floor to head height, and carry the equivalent of a large carrier bag full of
shopping. A typical shift in the shop is 5 hours, most of which will be standing.
Warehouse volunteers will need to be able to lift heavier loads and use supplied
equipment to transport stock from warehouse to shop, or their own vehicle when
necessary. They will need to have a methodical approach to their work and to
comply with the stock system we have in place. Work will include transporting crates
of goods to and from the shop in Wells Place as required by the shop manager of the
day. This role involves some lone working.

Supermarket collectors need to be reliable and able to collect baskets/trolleys of
shopping and load/unload them from their cars, which should be at least of medium
size. They are the ’face’ of Eastleigh Basics Bank, so a friendly and pleasant manner
when interacting with store staff is essential.

All volunteers will be expected to read and comply with Eastleigh Basics Bank
Policies, and work as part of the team to ensure the health and safety of all
customers and volunteers, including themselves.

We are unable to offer volunteer roles to people who have used our service during
the past 6 months, or those struggling with alcohol or substance use. We would not
usually recruit volunteers from people with criminal convictions.
